Emotional Intelligence

Have you heard the term emotional intelligence? It is becoming more popular these days as people become more aware of theirs and other’s emotions. Emotional intelligence is not the same as intellectual intelligence or social intelligence. Also referred to as your emotional quotient or your EQ, this is one’s capacity to identify, observe and handle your own emotions as well as the emotions of other people.

Those who are emotionally intelligent can connect and relate to others on a deeper level than those who are not as in tune with their emotions. Having a high EQ can help you build stronger relationships as you will be a great listener and display empathy. It can also help you to be a better leader, whether at work or in your community.

To work towards building up your EQ, you must be aware of the three elements emotionally intelligent people must possess. These include emotional awareness, emotional application and emotional management. You must be able to become aware of your own emotions, use them for your benefit and then manage them. Then you can work towards understanding the emotions of others. You must learn to practice mindfulness in every situation and focus on positive experiences and outcomes. There are many ways you can learn more about boosting your EQ. There are classes you can take, and many of them are available online and are free. There are also many TED talks and other lectures given by positive psychologists that you can watch online.
